apple inc AAPL is facing a patent troll lawsuit that could be related to the recent reduction in active noise cancellation AirPods max.

What happened: In September 2021, a patent troll called “Jawbone Innovations‘ sued Apple after it bought audio-related patents from defunct Jawbone. The Cupertino-based tech giant faces allegations of patent infringement, according to to Apple Insider.

Noting that active lawsuits cannot be discussed with the public, Apple has changed how active noise cancellation works in its devices without notice, the report said, citing a Reddit User named Facingcondor who shared a bunch of evidence to support his theory.

There’s no word on how the ongoing litigation is affecting the company. However, the Tim cook-run company appears to be protecting itself from further harm related to the case by removing the offending features.

Apple did not immediately respond to gasoline gas requests for comment.

Why it matters: Apple released a few updates in 2021 and 2022, but didn’t publicly state the reasons why.

The company removed noise cancellation from the iPhone 13 microphone when it was released. In 2021, an update to AirPods Pro changed the ANC algorithm.

This year, AirPods Max has been updated to change the ANC algorithm, making the noise-cancellation even worse.

It is reasonable to assume that these updates have some connection to the court case, which is still ongoing, the report said.
