A Yemeni engineer has unveiled his vision of an AI-controlled plane that would allow up to 5,000 passengers to stay in flight indefinitely, with engines powered by nuclear power.

What happened: Hashem Al-Ghaili calls it “Sky Cruise” and has released a YouTube video showing a mockup of what the plane would look like.

The giant aircraft would have the ability to stay aloft at all times, powered by 20 engines that, according to Al-Ghaili’s video, will use a “highly controlled fusion reaction to provide unlimited power to the sky hotel.”

One of the unique features of this visionary aircraft is a glass dome entertainment deck that would allow passengers a 360 degree view of the sky. There would also be luxurious hotel rooms for guests and amenities such as bars, restaurants, cinemas and a shopping mall.

Skeptical reactions: Reactions to the video were largely skeptical. A YouTube viewer pointed out the danger of Al-Ghaili’s concept plane: “There is a very good reason why nuclear reactors have never been placed on an airplane, as that would create a nuclear bomb with passengers.”

Another commenter noted that the Sky Cruise would be a target for terrorism: “So basically a modern day Titanic in the sky. That thing would be a huge target to shoot down or be ambushed by a sky.”

There were also questions about the reality of creating such an aircraft. One person said getting the plane airborne could be a challenge in itself: “If it weren’t for physics and aerodynamics, then this ship could actually take off.”

Another commenter envisioned the Sky Cruise becoming a haven for the rich: “I have a feeling this is where all the rich people will be hiding during the apocalypse and just be flying around over the rest of the world while everyone is going crazy against each other battle …
