Along with running Twitter, Elon Musk is managing director of Tesla Inc TSLA and SpaceX, and running the businesses required long hours and some frugal tendencies.

Here’s some advice from Musk for young people on how to be a leader.

What happened: As the head of Twitter, SpaceX, and Tesla, Musk might have a good grasp of what it takes to run a business.

In a December 2021 Consequence of the “Lex Fridman Podcast” Musk gives some career tips.

“(Don’t try) to be a leader to be a leader,” Musk said.

The Tesla CEO said that the people who make good leaders can often be people who don’t want to be leaders. Musk went on to say that people shouldn’t choose their careers based on whether it will make them famous.

Musk said people should find a job they’re good at and have the skills to make it work.

“Try to be useful, do things that are useful to those around you, to the world.”

Musk said being useful can be difficult, but people can wonder if they’re contributing more than they’re consuming.

“Try to make a net positive contribution to society.”

Musk encourages people to read lots of books and absorb as much information as possible.

“Also try to develop a general knowledge. Try to learn a little about a lot of things.”

Why it matters: Musk had an entrepreneurial drive from a young age that led to the founding of the software company Zip2 that was sold Compaq for $300 million and the creation of what eventually became X.com PayPal Stocks PYPL.

A lunch meeting which was supposed to talk about space and hydrogen airplanes led to the creation of Tesla and a focus on electric vehicles, which Musk hadn’t originally planned.

Along with leaders SpaceX and Tesla, Musk also founded companies like neurolink and The boring company.
