Medical marijuana sales are finally starting in Mississippi

The Cannabis Company in Brookhaven, Mississippi, made history as the first dispensary in the state to begin selling medical marijuana on Wednesday, though there were a few glitches. Actually make this one big mistake when the sale was delayed.

The system the state uses to process sales from medical marijuana stores had trouble with point-of-sale operations earlier in the day, according to Melvin Robinson, executive director of the Mississippi Cannabis Trade Association, WLOX reported. After a two-and-a-half-hour delay, the cannabis shipment arrived around 1 p.m. and sales started rolling.

Good Day Farm, the South’s largest licensed medical cannabis producer, got involved when its flower was sold to a medical patient in Oxford, Mississippi.

“As a proud Ole Miss graduate, I am thrilled to be making our premium cannabis flower the first product available to patients in Mississippi,” said Ryan Herget, Good Day Farm’s director of retail management, in a press release. “As one of the largest cannabis companies in the South, it’s a privilege to be able to bring truly good products, grown and sold by good people, to the thousands of waiting patients in Mississippi.”

After a long awaited time

As of November 2020, nearly 75% of Mississippi voters a medical marijuana approved initiative that was invalid six months later by a Supreme Court ruling that the process was outdated and improperly placed on the ballot.

Finally, in February 2022, Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signed laws Law making Mississippi the 37th state to legalize medical marijuana.

“Access to marijuana was long overdue for Mississippi patients,” said Jax James, NORML’s state policies manager.

“An overwhelming majority of voters opted for this policy change over two years ago, and lawmakers had a duty to ensure that the process of providing access was not further delayed.”
