Australian Health Authority allows psilocybin and MDMA-assisted therapy for depression, PTSD

Beginning July 1, 2023, drugs containing psilocybin and MDMA can be prescribed by specially authorized psychiatrists to treat certain mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression.

The Decision recognizes the current lack of options for patients with certain treatment-resistant mental illnesses. This means that psilocybin and MDMA can be used therapeutically in a controlled medical setting.

The Section 56(1) exemption takes effect today in British Columbia

To contain an unprecedented and deadly overdose crisis in the province, the British Columbia government passed an exemption — Section 56(1) — with intent to curb the toxic illicit supply of drugs. The measure will officially come into force on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Health Canada granted the province of BC an exemption under Subsection 56(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) to decriminalize people who use drugs. Beginning January 31, 2023, adults 18 and older in BC will no longer be prosecuted for possession of a small amount of defined illegal drugs — including but not limited to certain opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA for personal use.

The new law will not be a carte blanche for all or specific recruitments. Although most persons in possession of illegal substances, or a combination of such illegal substances, may possess up to a total of 2.5 grams, certain restrictions apply.
