The race for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election has started on hushed tones donald trump officially announced his candidacy until now. This time around, the former president may have to contend with several of his party colleagues who are expected to give him an uphill battle.

What happened: If the Republican primary was fought between Trump and Ron DeSantis, the governor of florida would win hands down after to a Yahoo! News/YouGov poll conducted between February 2nd and 6th.

About 45% preferred DeSantis when asked who they would vote for if their state’s 2024 Republican primary were held that day. Trump received support from 41% of respondents. About 11% said they were unsure and 3% preferred not to vote.

In a three-way race when Trump and DeSantis were set to join the former South Carolina governor Nicki Haley, The former president comes out on top, the poll found. About 38% said they would vote for Trump, compared to 35% for DeSantis and 11% for Haley.
Haley, who is of Indian descent, previously served as the US ambassador to the United Nations under Trump. She is reportedly expected to announce her nomination in her home state next week.

Why it matters: Though DeSantis hasn’t officially announced his 2024 presidential bid, he’s reportedly started preparing for it. Bloomberg reported that the governor is likely to make an official announcement in late spring or early summer after the state legislature closes.

The Yahoo! News/YouGov’s poll results concurred with Trump’s niece’s views Mary Trump recently on her podcast. Your uncle has a charisma that no one else has has the GOP field, which makes him more dangerous, she said.

“I want to see him destroy her and himself in the process, I hope so,” Mary Trump said.
