In a sensational interview microsoft corp MSFT CEO Satya Nadella called voice assistants, incl Apple Inc AAPL siri, Amazon.com, Inc AMZN alexaand those of Microsoft cortana “stupid as a rock.”
Earlier this month Nadella revealed in one interview with the Financial Times that none of the voice assistants really work.
“We had a product that was meant to serve as a new front-end for a lot of information that wasn’t working,” he said.
In 2016 Nadella boasted about voice assistants, claiming that “bots are the new apps.” But with the emergence of artificial intelligence, he’s since changed his mind.
Microsoft launched its Cortana voice assistant service in 2014. Nadella discontinued its service on Android and iOS two years ago, stating that he no longer sees the product as a competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant The Verge reported.
With a focus on AI, Microsoft recently invested about $10 billion OpenAIthe research lab behind the AI chatbot ChatGPT.
Microsoft also launched its new Am Search engine created in collaboration with OpenAI. The search engine now displays ChatGPT-like capabilities, including writing personalized emails, translating text into over a hundred languages, and recommending various searches.

adam cheyer, Co-creator of Siri, told the Financial Times that ChatGPT’s ability to understand complex instructions has eclipsed existing voice assistants.
“The previous skills were just too cumbersome,” he said. “No one knows what they can or cannot do. He doesn’t know what to say or not to say.”
