Exiled Tibetan leader is asking US to urge China to reverse policy

The head of the Tibetan government-in-exile in India called on the US Congress to urge China to “reverse or change its current politics” in the Tibet region.

What happened: Penpa Tseringknown as Sikyong the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), in a first address to Congress, said Tibet is dying a ‘slow death’ under Xi Jinping‘s rule.

“Unless the PRC (the People’s Republic of China) is persuaded to reverse or change its current policies, Tibet and the Tibetans will definitely die a slow death,” Penpa Tsering told a bipartisan Congressional Executive Committee hearing on China via video link, reported Reuters.

Tibetan activists believe that the problem Human rights violations in Tibet is overshadowed by the escalating concerns of Western nations, particularly in Washington, over Beijing’s military expansion, political pressure on Taiwanand the crackdown on minority groups in China’s Xinjiang region and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the US Undersecretary for Democracy and Human Rights Uzra Zeyatold the hearing that the Chinese government continues to “wage a campaign of repression aimed at forcibly sinicizing about 6 million Tibetans” and eradicating their religious, cultural and linguistic heritage.
