WASHINGTON, DC, Aug. 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — The ADAP Advocacy Association delivered a signing letter to Congress today expressing the HIV community’s collective concerns about Ryan White’s PrEP Availability Act (S.4395). to be brought. The letter of accession — endorsed by nearly 100 national, state and local organizations — is part of a national campaign to protect the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) against efforts to fund exposure prevention programs.

The signing letter was sent to the chair and senior member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), the chair and senior member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (E&C), and the co-chairs of the HIV/AIDS Caucus of the congress.

S.4395 is a grossly unwise public health approach and undermines commitment to people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. For over thirty years, RWHAP has been the country’s only public health program dedicated solely to providing support and services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Instead, other pre-existing prevention service programs should be strengthened and better funded. A better option to meet the needs of people who would benefit from PrEP and that is additional funds for HIV prevention. This approach would allow patient choice of medications and support for additional services, provider education and outreach. In addition, funding for HIV prevention could be directed to the communities most in need of prevention medicines and services, allowing for more equitable access. This approach would also leverage and strengthen existing HIV prevention infrastructure. It also preserves services and support for the people who need it most…people living with HIV/ADIS.
