Gun Control vs. Opioids: When asked what was “the greatest threat to U.S. public health right now,” a majority of Republicans recognized the opioid epidemic, while a majority of Democrats said it was access to guns. These two answers were the most popular choices, with 37% of Republicans choosing opioids/fentanyl and 35% of Democrats choosing access to guns.

Cancer, which was one of the top three causes of death for Americans in 2021, along with heart disease and COVID-19, was seen as the top public health threat by just 12% of all respondents, ranking second with obesity. with 21% of all answers.

Respondents’ level of education also affected their likelihood of choosing one cause over the other.

“People with a high school diploma or less are three to one more concerned about opioids than those with a college degree, who see obesity as the bigger problem,” Ipsos said in a press release.

The survey was conducted between February 17 and 21 this year on a nationally representative sample of 1,213 adults over the age of 18.

According to Axios, the responses were consistent with partisan policies in government.

“The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee has started the year under the new Republican majority with a hearing on fentanyl, while House Democrats have requested a secret briefing on mass shootings,” the outlet wrote.
