A Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit unsealed Friday strengthens the case against the former president donald trumpaccording to legal experts.
Trump Ally Says Evidence Supports Charges: Alan Dershowitz, a former Harvard Law School professor and former member of Trump’s legal team, believes there is currently enough evidence to indict the ex-president, the New York Post reported.
“Any DC grand jury would indict Trump on evidence that he classified material in violation of various laws,” Dershowitz reportedly told the Post.
The view comes after the FBI unsealed the heavily redacted affidavit used to issue the warrant. It revealed that federal agencies were looking for classified government documents when they raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
Of the 184 classified documents obtained during the search, 25 have been marked top secret, 92 as secret and 67 as confidential.
However, Dershowitz warned that the Justice Department is pursuing the case. The view is based on the fact that the probe failed what he called the Nixon and Clinton tests, the report said.
The former test requires building “broad bipartisan” support and the latter must provide evidence that Trump’s behavior was significantly worse than Hillary Clinton’s own misuse of classified information, Dershowitz added.
Dershowitz was part of Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial.
Effect of the affidavit: Other attorneys prosecuting the case have also responded after reviewing the affidavit. There is likely evidence that Trump “contained in violation of applicable law classified documents in a location that was not secure under regulations.” david weinstein, a former federal attorney from the Southern District of Florida said, according to Business Insider.
