Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) slammed billionaire entrepreneurs Elon Musk for the distance from Twitter‘s old blue tick on Thursday.
What happened: The American lawmaker and activist took to Twitter to complain afterwards The social media giant started removing old ticks.
“Jokes aside, this sets the stage for major potential damage if a natural disaster strikes and no one knows which agencies, reporters or outlets are real,” AOC said.

“Not long ago we had big flash floods. We had to quickly mobilize trusted information to save lives. It’s only gotten harder today,” she added.
AOC, which is a member of the US House of Representatives, holds a gray tick reserved for “government or multilateral organizational accounts”.
Why it matters: AOC cited another tweet from a user that contained tweets from two accounts claiming to represent the official New York government. Since neither account had an authenticity tick, it was difficult to tell which account was genuine.

The Musk-run microblogging platform began implementing its new policy to remove the old verified badges on Thursday. Under the new policy, the company said only individuals and organizations with subscriptions would receive a verified badge.
