Apple issues new warning to store workers over unionization -…

apple inc AAPL Store workers have taken small steps towards unionisation, with two stores successfully working with workers’ union groups.

With union organizing efforts underway in several other locations, the tech giant plans to crack down on it with an iron fist, according to a Bloomberg columnist Markus Gurman.

Apple succeeds in stopping unionization: Apple’s ongoing push against unionization continues as the company seeks to avoid it kind of work drive seen at companies such as Amazon, Inc. AMZN And Starbucks Corp. SBUXGurman said in his weekly Power On newsletter.

The company’s determination comes at a time when talks about unionizing have been gaining ground. About 270 Apple retail stores in the US recently held meetings with employees during a gathering known as “Daily Downloads,” the columnist said. The meetings discussed the risks of unionizing and provided updates on negotiations between Apple and the first unionized store in Towson, Maryland, he added.

Apple’s previous anti-union initiatives, including question-and-answer sessions with employees and withholding new benefits from unionized locations, have borne fruit since there are only two unionized Apple stores, Gurman noted.

Stories in Atlanta and St. Louis have abandoned their intention to unionize, he added.

Recent initiatives: Apple has issued prepared messages to be read to employees in its US stores, Gurman said. For example, the unionization of Apple’s Towson Store has been described as a “cautionary tale,” he added. Points Apple’s management has reportedly raised include:

  • The International Confederation of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ requirement that fees be 1.5% of salary, which could quickly add up over time
  • Preference for full-time employees and thus disadvantage for part-time employees
