Apple, IncAAPL Mixed reality headset that has been in the works since 2017 could finally see the light of day this year.
What happened: After repeated delays Apple now plans to launch the MR headset later this spring, ahead of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June, Bloomberg columnist Markus Gurman said in its weekly “Power On” newsletter.
The latest plan is for the company to introduce the headset to consumers under the “Reality Pro” name, and then let developers work on software features in June, he said. Deliveries could begin later in the fall of 2023, he added.
Apple sees the product as its “hot launch” for the year, Gurman said.
To avoid further delays, the company is bringing in resources from multiple hardware and software development departments, the Apple author said. This has impacted other projects, some of which have been hit by their own delays and budget cuts amid the economic slowdown, he said.
Apple is therefore likely to have fewer major breakthroughs this year.

iPad: Gurman doesn’t expect any major updates to the iPad in 2023, although he said the company is working on larger iPads. Those won’t arrive until the first half of 2024, he said. Any updates to the iPad mini, iPad Air, and entry-level iPad this year will be nothing more than a specification upgrade, he added.
Apple Watch, Other Accessories: Gurman doesn’t anticipate any major changes to the Apple Watch’s hardware other than a performance boost. AirPods would not receive any notable updates, he added.
