Speaking during a speech at an event in New Delhi, India on Friday, Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said that the war in Ukraine “was launched against us”, causing the audience to laugh.
In response to a question at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics, Lavrov said, “You know about the war that we are trying to stop and that has been waged against us with the help of the Ukrainian people.”
The audience erupted in laughter after his statement about the war against Russia.
After a pause, Lavrov said: “Of course, the conflict affected Russia’s policies, including energy policy.”
“To describe the change bluntly, we would no longer rely on partners in the West,” he added.
Russian President Wladimir Putin lately criticized the US for supporting Ukraine and said the West is preparing to turn Ukraine into a launch pad full of weapons to attack Russia.
Putin has accused Western countries, including the US, of starting the war with Ukraine.
“It was unleashed by this very collective West, which organized and then backed an unconstitutional armed coup in Ukraine in 2014, and then promoted and justified the genocide of people in Donbass,” Putin said.
He previously said that Russia is not fighting with the Ukrainian people, but with the Kiev regime and the West.
The US State Department has commented on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, saying that Putin will be arrested responsible for war crimes carried out against civilians in Ukraine.
However, last month Putin’s spokesman said the Kremlin was open to negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov has said Moscow would not give up its claims in four Ukrainian regions. If Kiev accepted its control over these regions, Russia was open to talks.
