Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis could be lagging behind former President Donald Trump in opinion polls, but he seems to strike a chord with those who pour millions of dollars into election campaigns.

What happened: During his recent visit to Israel last week, DeSantis dined with the late billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s widow, Miriam Adelson, Trump’s top financier in 2020, Axios reported cite sources.

The governor visited Israel as part of a four-nation tour to improve his foreign policy credentials. The dinner at the Museum of Tolerence was hosted by Denver-based executive director Larry Mizel, who founded the museum. DeSantis was the guest of honor at the dinner attended by Israeli President Isaac Herzog and GOP donor Lee Samson, the report said.

The Florida governor’s dinner speech focused on US-Israel relations but avoided discussing his political plans or potential presidential candidates.

Why it matters: Adelson reportedly told several Republican candidates last year that she would remain neutral in the 2024 election. The Adelsons previously supported DeSantis during the 2018 gubernatorial election, donating at least $500,000 to the Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC.

Mizel, who hosted the dinner, was one of the biggest donors to Trump and Republican groups in Colorado, according to Axios. Samson, meanwhile, hosted a fundraiser for Trump at his Beverly Hills home in 2019, the publication added.
