Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates, Who is also a supporter of policies and measures to combat climate change, announced a positive development on Friday.
What happened: Last week, Gates published a Scientific American article titled “Renewable Energy Marches On” which discusses the increasing role of renewable energy as a power source.
Citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, The article notes that by 2022, renewable energy would account for about a third of global electricity generation, and growing.
In 2022, renewable energy generation capacity grew by a record 295 gigawatts and renewable energy accounted for more than 80 percent of the total additional electricity capacity, according to the report.
Gates praised the development and tweeted, “Really good news.”

Why it matters: After leaving his position at Microsoft, Gates became involved in humanitarian action to fight climate change, poverty and disease.
The billionaire has written a book, How to Avoid Climate Disaster, in which he outlines actions to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Gates has previously said that underdeveloped countries will be hit hardest by climate change, which has already led to historic floods, droughts and heat waves.
The billionaire has also stressed the importance of innovation, investing in the development of clean technologies and tackling climate change through government action.
