What happened: Blinken urged Lavrov to take steps toward peace and urged the release of a US citizen detained by Russia. reported Bloomberg.
Blinken told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday that he told Lavrov, “Stop this aggressive war, engage in meaningful diplomacy that can bring about a just and lasting peace.”
A spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Blinken approached Lavrov and “we didn’t push him away,” according to Bloomberg.
The spokeswoman said what Blinken said “does not deserve our attention. There was nothing interesting.”
Why it matters: The circumstances of the meeting between the top US diplomat and the Russian foreign minister remain unclear, Bloomberg noted.
Blinken reportedly had no plans to work with Lavrov or China’s newly appointed foreign minister Qin Gang.
