Bomb hurricane: 200 million people experience how arctic cold stops

A powerful and windy winter storm – dubbed the “bomb cyclone” because of the drop in air pressure – sweeps its way across the United States and Canada. More than 200 million people are affected the busiest travel days of the year.

As of 9:17am CST Friday morning — 2,421 flights to or from the US were delayed, with a total of 3,616 cancellations for flights within, to or from the US, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

The hardest-hit airport is Seattle-Tacoma International as of Friday, with 212 flights canceled and 34 delayed.

Next is New York’s LaGuardia Airport with 190 flights canceled and 32 delayed, followed by Chicago’s O’Hare International with 173 flights canceled and 92 delayed.

“Widespread low high temperature readings are possible Friday from the lower Mississippi Valley northeast into the Tennessee and Ohio valleys and extend across much of the east from the southeast through the southern to central Appalachian Mountains and into the mid-Atlantic on Friday. ‘ the National Weather Service said in an update Friday morning.

Stocks to watch: The winter storm could discourage last-minute in-person Christmas shopping and negatively impact retailers’ important Christmas quarter sales. Department store stocks like target company TGTand Macy’s Inc M can take a hit.

Stock of residential generators Generac Holdings Inc. GNRCand Pioneer Power Solutions, Inc. PPSI can see an elevator.

ski resort operators Vail Resorts, Inc. MTN could also see earnings jump through a cold, snowy winter.
