A Brit has admitted his role in one high profile social media hacka scheme that has seen the Twitter accounts of prominent US politicians and corporate officials stolen Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and other.

What happened: On Tuesday, Joseph James O’Connor confessed in a New York court to hacking into Twitter, which led to him posing as influential figures, reported Bloomberg.

The hack included names such as former US President Obama, current President Joe Biden, Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Musk, Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN founder jeff bezos, microsoft corp MSFT Founder of Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffettamong other things as part of a Bitcoin BTC/USD Fraud.

Prosecutors have said the crimes of the 23-year-old, also known as “PlugwalkJoe,” involved SIM swaps, which involved porting phone numbers to new devices to circumvent security measures, but the scope of his actions went beyond that and led for his extradition from Spain on April 26.

According to the indictment, O’Connor admitted to multiple cybercrimes, including manipulating social media accounts, conducting online extortion and engaging in cyberstalking. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23, the report said.

Why it matters: In July 2020, it was reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was investigating a massive hack on Twitter that resulted in the hijacking of several high-profile verified accounts.
