apple inc AAPL It is not expected that many new features will be introduced in iOS 17 but may contain elements that enable sideloading of apps.

What happened: As we approach the annual Apple World developer conference or WWDC in June, all eyes are on the forthcoming updates of the company’s main operating systems, with iOS 17 in particular attracting a lot of attention.

However, reports suggest that this year’s changes to iOS could prioritize regulatory compliance over flashy new features. reported AppleInsider.

In his latest “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg columnist Markus Gurman said that the Cupertino, The California-based tech giant would introduce iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 and a major watchOS 10 update.

He said that iOS and iPadOS updates “are unlikely to offer big new features,” but “could fill a checklist of user requests with minor improvements.”

Gurman said Apple would “make more noise beyond WWDC itself” by overhauling iOS to allow sideloading.

For the uninitiated, sideloading refers to installing apps on a device without actually using it app storetypically by transferring them from a connected computer, downloading them from the web and installing them separately, or getting them from a third-party app store, the report said.

Why it matters: In December 2022 the time had come reported that Apple is preparing for upcoming changes EU laws, including the Digital Markets Actfor which the company must allow third-party app stores on its iPhone and iPad devices.

According to recent reports, Apple is taking steps to ensure it is ready to comply with these new regulations, which are due to come into force in 2024.
