Disabled residents of the East Bay received a $100,000 back-off benefit, which surprised two children

Oakdale, California (KGO) – A long-term resident of Hayward recently discovered that she had a monthly disability benefit shortfall of more than $500 for 17 years.

What happened next changed not only her life, but also the lives of two worthy children.

Suzanne Riggs suffers from chronic local pain syndrome.

She said that in 1997, her left ankle injury had not been diagnosed for two years.

Susanna said: “The wound itself has healed, but the signal from the brain keeps saying no, there is pain, there is pain.”

She deals with this debilitating pain every day. But she thought she was lucky.

“I spent seven years in a wheelchair. I shouldn’t walk again, so I’m very lucky,” Susanna said.

In 2004, the workers’ compensation payment gave her a one-time disability compensation.

This payment affects the amount she can get from social security.

One day, she noticed that her statement was a little strange.

“I suddenly understood. I think, I think it’s wrong.”

She said that she found that she had received $519 less than she deserved each month for 17 years.

She contacted Social Security, but her appeal was of no avail.

“I have no other recourse. No lawyer will help. It is me who opposes Social Security,” she said.

She turns to 7 by your side. We contacted the Social Security Administration, and it gave her more than $100,000 in debt.

Our 7 On Your Side producer asked her what the money meant to her.

“I can help the child.”

“You are an adoptive parent,” said producer Randall Yip.

“Yes. We just became adoptive parents two weeks ago and we have two amazing children.”

She began to cry.

“Feel sorry.”

Due to confidentiality, we cannot show it to the children.

I am grateful that the money went to such a caring family.

“If it weren’t for you, the result would be very different. No one would fight for me,” Susanna said.

Social Security said it could not comment on individual cases. However, it did send us some tips on how to find errors in your statement.
