Former First Lady Melanie Trump was concerned about the way her husband, former president donald trump, managed the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recently published book.
What happened: According to a New York Times correspondent’s book, Melania was “shaken by the coronavirus and convinced Trump is screwing it up.” Peter Baker and his wife New Yorker staff writer Susan Glaser. The book, titled The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021, was published on September 20, 2022.
Melania shared her concerns with the former New Jersey governor Chris Christie and enlisted his support to persuade the former US president to take the threat more seriously, the authors reportedly wrote in the book.
Melania recalled telling Trump, “You’re screwing this up. I’m serious. It’s getting really bad and you have to take it more seriously than you take it,” Baker and Glasser wrote in the book.
Trump shrugged and said, “You worry too much,” the authors wrote.
Why it matters: The US was one of the worst-hit nations by the pandemic. Deaths up 19% between 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the largest increase in mortality in 100 years, US Census Bureau estimates showed.
Trump, as hinted at in the book, embraced it early on, scoffing at mask-wearing and suggesting disinfectant injections and sunlight treatments would help fight the disease.
According to a 2020 report in The Washington PostTrump is said to have told the author Bob Woodward in March 2020 that he wanted to downplay it just so as not to create panic.
By the way, Trump and the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19 in 2020, shortly after they organized the Rose Garden Party in September to announce the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett for the US Supreme Court.
