activist fund Elliott administration is reportedly stalking an ailing cinema chain Cineworld Group plc CNNWQ CNWGQ.
Elliott, which is owned by Paul Singer, intends to buy Cineworld’s operations in Eastern Europe and Israel, according to Sky News reported on Saturday. According to the report, the fund considered an offer for the entire UK-based theater chain, but opted to omit the company’s UK and US operations.
Cineworld, the second largest theater chain, is currently under bankruptcy protection and expects to emerge from the process in the first half of this year.
rival AMC Entertainment Group, Inc. AMC was formerly interested in buying cinemas from Cineworld, which operates Regal Cinemas. However, AMC pulled out, noting in a filing in late December that talks with Cineworld’s lenders to purchase the company’s assets in Europe and the US had ended.
A rep for Elliott declined to comment on the potential deal to Sky News.
