On Friday, Elon Musk-in possession Twitter published the source code for its recommendation algorithm.

In a blog postTwitter said it uploaded the source code to two repositories on the code-sharing platform GitHub. The social media platform said it would allow users and programmers to take a look into how it works and suggest changes to the algorithm.

Talking about the release during a Twitter Space meetingMusk said: “Our first release of the so-called algorithm will be quite embarrassing and people will find a lot of bugs, but we will fix them very quickly.”

“Even if you don’t agree with something, you know why it’s there and you’re not being secretly manipulated. The analogue we are aiming for is a great example of Linux as an open source operating system. One can, theoretically, discover many exploits for Linux. What happens is that the community identifies and fixes these exploits,” he added.

In a tweet on Friday, Musk said that “most of the recommendation algorithm” has been released and the rest will be released soon.

The billionaire entrepreneur also said Twitter would update its recommendation algorithm every 24 to 48 hours based on user suggestions.

After the source code was released, users shared what they found exciting. For example, one user shared that the codes show that Twitter explicitly tracks metrics for users divided into four different groups, namely ‘elon’, ‘power_user’, ‘democrat’ and ‘republican’.

When a guest in the Twitter Space session asked about the metrics collected, one of the Twitter developers explained that the algorithm only collects statistics.

Also on Friday, Platformer’s Zoë Schiffer tweeted that before releasing the algorithm, Twitter had removed some source code that was affecting the reach of users (including Musk’s).
