Twitter CEO Elon Musk picked an unusual time last week to email employees about that of the social media company Telework Policy.

“Office is not optional,” the billionaire entrepreneur wrote in an email to employees sent at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a tweet from Platformer editor-in-chief ZoĆ« Schiffer.

Per Schiffer’s tweet, Musk wrote in his memo that the company’s San Francisco headquarters “was half empty yesterday.”

Last November, Musk Remote work banned on Twitter in his first email to employees after buying the company.

He explained that the social media platform requires “intense work” in the office to turn its fortunes and requires employees to be in the office at least 40 hours a week.

Even at Tesla Inc TSLAMusk asked return employees to the office, otherwise they would be fired.

In a tweet last year, Musk said that working from home during the pandemic has led people to believe they don’t have to work hard.

In November, Twitter laid off thousands of employees in departments across the company, a move by Musk tried to justify. Last January, the company laid off employees who were responsible for global content moderation.

Reports previously noted that the social media platform has laid off about 80% of its employees since acquiring Musk, and that the headcount was about 1,300 employees earlier this year. Musk later refuted those numbers, saying Twitter had about 2,300 active employees.

The company reported a net loss of $270 million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2022 compared to a profit of $66 million for the same period last year.
