The USA Ministry of Transport examines the Elon Musk Co-founder of a brain chip company neurolink for the potentially illegal movement of dangerous pathogens.

What happened: The existence of the investigation came to light after the Medical Committee for Responsible Medicinea non-profit research and advocacy group, wrote to the Minister of Transport Pete Buttigieg on Thursday to update him on records received, Reuters reported.

The advocacy group said it received emails and other documents pointing to unsafe packaging and shipments of implants removed from the brains of monkeys, the report said.

These implants could reportedly transmit infectious diseases — a violation of federal law, according to the PCRM.

“We are conducting an investigation to ensure Neuralink is in full compliance with federal regulations and is protecting its workers and the public from potentially dangerous pathogens,” a department spokesman said, according to the report.

Why it matters: The letter, addressed to Buttigieg, indicates that pathogens such as antibiotic-resistant staph and the herpes B virus may have been transported without proper containment measures, Reuters reported.

The communication indicated that these pathogens could cause serious health problems in humans.

The incidents reportedly date back to 2019, when Neuralink was conducting experiments on primates through the University of California, Davis.

During the university’s partnership with Neuralink, the latter was not happy with the slow pace of animal testing, current and former employees told Reuters.

Musk’s pressure on collaborators to make progress resulted in bugs that hampered some experiments, according to Reuters.

Neuralink chips could be placed in people in 6 months, Musk said in early December. However, the startup was plagued by allegations of animal cruelty.
