Elon Musk‘S SpaceX has received approval to lease Space Launch Complex 6 (SLC-6) at the US Space Force’s Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
What happened: SpaceX has received permission to lease SLC-6s for Falcon rocket launches, the US Space Force said in a statement Monday. Commander of Space Launch Delta 30 (SLD 30). Colonel Rob Long signed a statement of support for the permit on April 21.
“This is an exciting time for Vandenberg Space Force Base, our nation’s premier West Coast launch site for military, civilian and commercial space operations. This agreement will add to SLC-6’s rich history and builds on the already strong partnership with SpaceX,” said Col. Rob Lang.
The SLC-6 launch pad has now been empty for over seven months United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta IV heavy launch of a spy satellite on September 24, 2022 – the last launch of the rocket from California. ULA is a joint venture between Lockheed Martin Corp LMT And Boeing Co B.A.

The new lease is part of the first round of launch pad allocations by SLD 30. Further allocations would be made in the future, the statement added.
Why it matters: SpaceX is looking at a busy launch schedule. In March, CEO Elon Musk said that to the end 70 launches are expected for SpaceX for the remainder of 2023. SpaceX had 224 launches in total so far and 186 landings, as stated on the company’s website.
The new lease comes ahead of Phase 3 of the Pentagon’s National Security Space Launch program, which is expected to begin in the next year or so, it said Reuters. Various aerospace companies are preparing to compete for military launch procurement efforts.
