“Tommy Boy,” released in 1995, wasn’t a smash hit at the box office (although it was profitable) or with critics. The film gained a cult following and, for a certain generation, is one of the most quotable films of the 1990s.
What happened: When Jim Farley took over as CEO of Ford Motor Co f on October 1, 2020, many knew him because of his many years of experience in the automotive industry and his family ties to Ford.
Some knew that Farley was the ‘Saturday Night Live’ star’s cousin Chris Farley and also a cousin of the former professional ice hockey player and the voice of the Carolina Hurricanes, Trip Tracy.
In honor of the 27th anniversary of Tommy Boy’s theatrical release, Farley shared some potential new details about the film.
“People ask if Tommy Boy is based on our family. It was “Farley tweeted. “Over the summer, Chris was traveling with his father in Wisconsin. Every family has that child who entertains everyone. Chris was ours. God, we were lucky!”
Chris Farley’s father, Thomas, was President of Scotch Oil Co, a family business in Wisconsin, and Chris worked for his father after college.

Why it matters: Farley’s family tree has ties to the late actor and also links him to Ford, the company he now heads.
Farley’s grandfather Emmet Tracy was an early employee of Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Co. Tracy helped build the Ford Model T vehicles and worked at the Ford River Rouge factory.
Farley spent time with from 1990 to 2007 Toyota Motor Corp TM. The auto industry veteran then joined Ford, where he held various positions from 2007 to 2020, including executive vice president of global marketing, executive vice president of Ford Europe, Middle East and Africa and chief operations officer.
