What happened: In 2022, Buffett acquires shares in a media company Paramount Global UNIT VOLUMEPARAAthe owner of CBS, Paramount Pictures, Viacom and the Paramount+ streaming platform.

Over the past year, Buffett has increased the company’s stake in Paramount, making it one of his biggest bets in the media space. In its most recent filing, Berkshire Hathaway added 2.4 million shares of Paramount.

During a recent interview with CNBC’s Becky SwiftHowever, Buffett shared some interesting comments about the portfolio company.

“It’s basically not such a good deal,” Buffett said called by Paramount.

Buffett has been critical of the company’s distribution and production of films and its streaming service. The investor said the company has been able to track subscribers for streaming but has done so at a “terrible cost.”

Buffett also suggested that the company’s investment in Paramount was complete as the media company was mentioned as a takeover target.

“You have some people with deep pockets who are not going to quit,” he said.

When asked by Quick why he bought Paramount despite sharing negative comments about the stock, Buffett replied, “We’ll see what happens.”

CNBC commentator Jim Lebenthal from Cerity Partners additionally offered a further explanation after the video of the interview was shown during the “mid-term report”.

“Charlie Munger really got into that about two months ago, too,” Lebenthal said of Paramount. “This is clearly not a Buffett/Munger election.”

Lebenthal said the investment in Paramount may have been made by Todd Combs or Ted Weschlerwho are both investment managers at Berkshire Hathaway.
