It is official: Twitter has a new CEO.

On Friday, Elon Musk confirmed that he will be stepping down as CEO of the platform, handing over the role to Linda Yaccarino.

Yaccarino has an extensive career in media and advertising. Her departure from her role as chair of global advertising and partnerships at NBC Universal was also confirmed on Friday.

Musk said Yaccarino will launch in late June and will be “primarily focused on business operations” while he himself will be “focused on product design and new technologies.”

Last month, Yaccarino and Musk got together for a live chat at the Possible Miami marketing conference. The conversation in which Yaccarino interviewed Musk is more akin to a job interview after Yaccarino took over as Twitter executive.

While Yaccarino was still officially with NBU Universal, his comments on Musk and Twitter were already very positive, praising both Musk and the platform on various occasions.

“If this is a marketing conference, it’s the responsibility of every marketing executive affecting the culture in this country to offer a helping hand and say, ‘How can we help? How can we make a difference?’” [Twitter] better?” said Yaccarino in her opening remarks.

Twitter user @chancery_daily interpreted the conversation as Yaccarino’s attempt to “restore Musk’s reputation in real time”.

Musk went on to say, “To advance civilization, we must have freedom of speech,” explaining how acquiring Twitter fits his agenda alongside projects like SpaceX and Tesla.

“It’s a bigger deal than you think,” he said.

Musk defined free speech as the “foundation of democracy” and used a rhetorical question to define it: “Are people you don’t like…”
