A few years ago, when I went to the grocery store, I would buy packs of fajita seasoning. After I start eating clean, I’ll buy what I think is a healthier brand – I’ve never thought about making fajita seasoning at home.
But then I looked at the labels and even healthier brands included additives and preservatives. Now that I have a gluten allergy, I need to be extra careful, so I make all my seasonings in-house, including the fajita spice mix.
This fajita spice blend is delicious and perfect for making these quickly Easy Steak Fajitas, Sheet Pan Steak Fajitas, Crockport Steak Fajitas, or Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas.

common problem
Taco and fajita seasonings are so similar that you can use them without anyone noticing. However, there are some differences between the two.
Fajita seasoning is full of flavor but not as spicy as taco seasoning. It also includes a citrus ingredient that comes from lime juice with a homemade dressing after you’ve prepared the burrito.
Taco seasoning usually has a bolder, spicier flavor. However, both taste very similar and you can use them interchangeably. You can also adjust the flavor and spice content of the seasoning to your liking and what’s in your pantry.
Fajita seasoning is used for chicken or steak strips or shrimp. Cornstarch will help thicken the fajita sauce and also works better with protein.
However, it is not necessary and is not included in this fajita seasoning recipe.
cooking skills
- Use 2 tablespoons fajita seasoning 1 lb Chicken breast, steak or shrimp. You can also sprinkle some on the chopped peppers and onions as they are cooking.
- used as a marinade Mix the seasoning with a tablespoon of olive oil and massage into the chicken or steak, then place in the refrigerator overnight.
- Refresh the burritos with lime juice and cilantro. Authentic burritos contain citrus ingredients, which is why you’ll see citric acid in store-bought burrito seasoning packets — squirting fresh lime juice after the meat is done cooking. I also love the fresh cilantro for another layer of fresh flavor.
- Adjust spice levels. If you prefer a milder fajita seasoning, leave the peppers out or add more spiciness.
- Swap the smoked paprika Gives the fajita seasoning an extra smoky flavor. Or add a little chipotle paprika, which provides a bold smoky flavor and some heat.
- Add salt at the end. The seasoning includes salt, but adding a little salt after the protein is cooked will make the flavor more intense.
