What happened: Individuals who used Facebook in the United States from May 24, 2007 to December 22, 2022 may seek compensation under a $725 million settlement agreed to by Meta to resolve a class action lawsuit.

How to apply: Individuals may provide their information such as name, address and email address associated with the account on the facebookuserprivacysettlement.com website to receive their payment through various channels such as their bank account or Venmo.
The amount of compensation is expected to be minimal. It is determined by the number of eligible claims submitted and the length of time each claimant was an active Facebook user during the relevant period.
The total payout is distributed among eligible applicants, with those who have used the platform for a longer period of time receiving a larger share.
Why it matters: In 2018, Facebook revealed that 87 million users’ data had been inappropriately shared Cambridge Analyticawhich led to the initiation of litigation.
The data was allegedly used for construction Voter Profiles and supports the former US President’s campaign donald trump in the 2016 election.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg until now admitted that the company had made a mistake by trusting third-party application providers such as Cambridge Analytica and failing to take reasonable measures to prevent misuse of user data.
