The night before a big event for a company he founded, billionaire Richard Branson was awakened by it Elon Musk. Here’s the weird but true story.

What happened: In July 2021, Richard Branson went into space at the age of 71 and reached the milestone aboard a spacecraft Virgo Galactic SPCE. The flight beat its fellow billionaire jeff bezos into space in a race between their respective space companies.

The night before his space flight, Branson woke up abruptly at 2:30 a.m. local time at his New Mexico home to see Musk’s bare feet in his kitchen. A member of Branson’s family let Musk enter the home.

“Elon decided to surprise us,” Branson said said, having regard to the visit to The Sunday Times magazine. “He was there with his baby. Basically, he’s a nocturnal animal.”

Musk came to personally convey his well wishes to Branson ahead of his journey into space.

“I woke up two hours earlier than planned and jumped out of bed, and then I actually realized I had the wrong time, but I was wide awake then.”

According to a new story by Branson, he spent a night with Musk drinking tea “under the stars.”

“He doesn’t really sleep at night and gets his sleep during the day. We made a pot of tea and sat outside under the stars catching up.”

Musk also traveled to the New Mexico Spaceport to see Branson travel into space aboard the Virgin Galactic vehicle.

Musk and Branson first met at the Google co-founder’s wedding Larry Page, which took place on Necker Island, Branson’s private island.

The surprise meeting between Branson and Musk wasn’t the first either. Branson also recalls a time in 2008 when he was skiing with his family in Switzerland. Musk unexpectedly showed up with a Tesla sports car.

“Elon had just built his first car, shipped it and drove over to show us. We rode in it and it was extremely comfortable and beautiful.”
