“Sir! Direct hit! The canvas of the balloon has broken and is falling to the earth from a height of about 18 kilometers. They will hit the ground in about a minute-unless the gentlemen have jetpacks on board, they cannot Survived the impact.”

“Fire again, Lieutenant. Let us be sure this time.”

It’s time for another io9 concept art writing tip! It’s time to stretch out your fingers, pick up your pencil, pen and/or keyboard to create some inspiration Picture above. It comes from the eternal treasure house known as the British Library Public domain Flickr archives, Which is full of classic illustrations from the forgotten books (and other miracles) of the past. This time, our image comes from a novel in 1893, apparently titled Anarchist Hartman et al., By Edward Douglas Fawcett-also known as The doom of the big city.

Wikipedia Said this is a novel about a gentleman named Mr. Stanley working with nominal anarchists on his airship to destroy the city of London, destroy society, and let lawless rule. The illustration in the book does make people think that Stanely and Hartmann successfully razed the city to the ground, but there is no clue as to who the residents on the balloon are or what they are trying to accomplish.

But don’t feel limited to recreating the plot of this quirky old novel unless you want to (and boy, the “wait” in the title is just begging for some literary exploration)! Your story can be any powerful airship and a doomed balloon battle you want, or the events before or after it-maybe the rest of the balloon air force is sneaking up from behind?

Start writing, and then leave your short story in the comments for everyone to enjoy, please! If you really want to know the true story, the British Library Have you covered (one dollar).
