A Japanese man — known as the “Rental-Do-Nothing-Man” — with a massive following on social media is paid JPY10,000 (US$71) an hour to escort clients and simply exist as a companion.
What happened: A 38-year-old man, Shoji MorimotoHe advertises himself as someone who “can eat and drink and give simple feedback, but doesn’t do anything else”.
“Basically, I rent myself out. My job is to be where my clients want me and not to do anything special,” Morimoto told Reuters, adding that he’s done more than 4,000 sessions over the past four years have settled.
Morimoto, who has nearly a quarter of a million followers on Twitter, told the publication that he finds most of his clients on the microblogging platform. Of those, he said, almost a quarter are repeat customers, including people who have hired him nearly 270 times.
Morimoto shared that he’s done a number of things in his job, from going to a park to play with a person on a seesaw to beaming through a train window at a total stranger who wanted a goodbye and to wave. However, this does not mean that he will do anything; According to Morimoto, he has turned down many offers, including one to transport a refrigerator and another to go to Cambodia.
Before Morimoto discovered his true potential, he worked at a publishing company and was often scolded for “doing nothing.”
“I began to wonder what would happen if I offered my ability to do nothing as a service to clients,” he said.
“People tend to think that my ‘doing nothing’ is valuable because it’s useful (to others)… But it’s okay to really do nothing. People don’t have to be useful in a certain way,” he added.
