Kim Jong Un ordered its officials to carry out a “fundamental transformation” in agricultural production amid fears of worsening food shortages in the country.
What happened: State media reported Tuesday that the North Korean leader stressed the importance of stable agricultural production at the seventh extended plenary session of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The North Korean dictator said meeting grain production targets this year was a top priority amid reports Pyongyang was faced with severe food shortages and a growing humanitarian crisis.
Though the report does not detail the actions the Kim government would take, the North Korean leader said the changes must come in the next few years.
Earlier this month, South Korea said the food crisis in Pyongyang appears to have worsened and is facing serious food shortages.
The Seoul Ministry of Unification said so The isolated neighbor has effectively acknowledged the severe food shortages in the country. South Korea’s Unification Minister, Kwon Young Sepreviously told Parliament: “We are seeing a number of signs… although it does not yet appear that there is a stream of people starving.”
