Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un said on Friday recent rocket launches were “required to frighten the enemy”.
What happened: Kim blamed the US and South Korea for their “hectic, provocative and aggressive” war exercisesaccording to a press release from KCNA.
On Thursday, Kim took part in the launch of the ICBM with his daughter as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was due to meet his Japanese counterpart in Tokyo.
Kim said the test was prompted by “the frantic, provocative and aggressive large-scale war drills being conducted by the US and South Korean puppet traitors.”
“The strategic weapon launch exercise serves as an opportunity to issue a stronger warning to enemies who are deliberately escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula,” he said, according to state media.
North Korea “, despite the DPRK’s stern warning, persistently resorts to irresponsible and reckless military threats and understands the concerns about them [an] armed conflict, which has become an ominous reality, and to show more clearly the practical will … to counter with overwhelming offensive measures at any time,” she added.
The US and South Korea earlier this week began their largest military exercise in years, which will include simulations and live demonstrations at sea, in the air and on land. North Korea has long opposed such joint exercises, claiming they serve as rehearsals for an invasion.
Pyongyang fired at least 10 rockets in the last two weeks – four this week and at least six last week – after Kim ordered his army to prepare for “real war”.
