MA City Council unanimously decriminalizes magic mushrooms, sixth…

The Salem City Council unanimously passed a measure on Thursday, May 11th, decriminalizing the use of psilocybin mushrooms by adults.

The resolution was sponsored by Ward 7 councilman Andy Varela and supported by Bay Staters for Natural Medicine, pharmacist Miyabe Shields and Police Commissioner Lucas Miller, among others discussed in two public health meetings involving physicians, therapists, law enforcement and the public.

Proponents emphasized psilocybin’s non-addictive properties and containment benefits opioid epidemic and the police chief’s decision to address the health issue with his public stance critical to people like District Councilor Leveille McClain.

“We owe it to our residents to provide safe, reasonable and convenient access to herbal medicines,” Varela said. “Prioritizing psilocybin is the next step to ensure our healthcare professionals have one more tool in their toolbox.”

Bay Staters co-founder James David agreed, “Our communities deserve access to these herbal medicines. From parents to veterans to law enforcement, many different types of people process trauma with these gifts of nature. They become more conscientious and compassionate versions of themselves.”

The resolution asks the Essex County District Attorney to prioritize the prosecution of individuals who use psychedelic-assisted therapeutic services, possess, share, or cultivate psilocybin-containing mushrooms without intent to disseminate.

Additionally, investigations and arrests of adults for use or possession of psilocybin mushrooms are the city’s lowest law enforcement priority. It states that no city department, board, or agency should use city funds or resources to help enforce laws that provide criminal sanctions for adult use and possession of the psychedelic.

Once the resolution goes into effect, it will not authorize or permit the commercial sale or manufacture of psilocybin…
