Nokia and Samsung sign 5G patent license agreement

• The agreement covers Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies
• Samsung pays multi-year license fees to Nokia
• The previous contract expired at the end of 2022

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced this today it has signed a new cross license patent contract with Samsung after expiry of the previous agreement late 20th22.

Under the agreement, which covers Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies, Samsung will make payments to Nokia over a multi-year period beginning January 1, 2023. The terms of the agreement remain confidential between the parties.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologiessaid: “Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry and we are pleased to have reached an amicable settlement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, which has seen decades of investment in R&D and contributions to mobile standards and other technologies.”

The agreement is in line with the assumptions disclosed by Nokia in the commentary on Nokia Technologies’ long-term outlook in its financial report for the third quarter and January to September 2022 published on October 20, 2022.

Backed by more than €130 billion invested in research and development since 2000, Nokia’s industry-leading patent portfolio consists of around 20,000 patent families, including over 4,500 patent families that have been declared essential for 5G. Nokia contributes its inventions to open standards in exchange for the right to license them on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Businesses can license and use these technologies without having to make significant investments in the standards themselves, driving innovation and the development of new products and services for consumers.
