CANADA, September 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Today, ocean waya leading global marine conservation organization, marks an impactful milestone by supporting the Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanups one millionth volunteer.

To help Ocean Wise recognize the achievements of the Shoreline Cleanup, local leaders will be involved in hosting public events across Canada including:

The celebration comes on International Coastal Cleanup Day, an important moment of awareness and opportunity to take direct action to address issues affecting ocean health.

Additionally, anyone over the age of 18 who registers for an Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanup in Canada on September 17 will be entered into a contest for a chance to win two round-trip Air Canada tickets that valid for travel between Canada and any destination served by Air Canada, worldwide, courtesy of Air Canada (excluding Quebec registrations. Conditions and travel restrictions apply).

Since 1994, the Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanup (formerly known as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup) has conducted 30,542 cleanups and collected more than 5 million pounds of debris from Canada’s shores. The initiative’s presenting sponsor is Loblaw Companies Limited, partnering with Ocean Wise to advance conservation action and combat climate change.

As a direct action program, the Shoreline Cleanup addresses the serious problem of trash and plastic pollution. According to the UN Environment Program 400 million tons Plastic waste is produced worldwide every year, and the production of primary plastic is expected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. An alarming proportion of this ends up as waste and pollutes the environment.

Ocean Wise is also announcing a new call to action via a joint statement with Loblaw, Tru Earth and other partners including O’Neill, Corona, Wheaton and Air Canada. The statement calls on Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanup volunteers to recover over two million kilograms of trash by the end of 2025.
