Murthy said on Sunday that he did not want to make an announcement before the FDA, but did not object that this might happen this week. He cited a lot of data to show that Pfizer’s two-dose regimen is safe and effective.
Currently, the vaccine is being distributed under the emergency use authorization of the FDA. Murthy said he believes that once the agency completes a full review and is approved, it will persuade more Americans to receive injections.
He also expects more vaccine requirements, including requirements for teachers and staff, describing mandatory requirements as “reasonable” practices to create a safe environment for children and others.
Murthy said that, given the highly spread of delta mutations, when health and well-being are “at risk”, “we must take all possible measures.”
