Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis Is generally expected to throw his hat in the Republican primary, and in a pre-emptive move, former President donald trump and his followers never missed an opportunity to attack the governor.
What happened: As recently as last week, Trump supporters targeted DeSantis with a 30-second ad that begins with the narration, “Ron DeSantis loves to put his fingers where they don’t belong.”
The ad shows a man dipping three of his fingers in chocolate pudding and popping it in his mouth. Throughout the duration of the video, headlines from publications critical of DeSantis appear.
“We’re not just talking about pudding. DeSantis has his dirty fingers all over seniors’ claims as he cuts Medicare, cuts Social Security, and even raises our retirement age,” says the narrator.
“Tell Ron DeSantis to keep his pudding fingers off our money or get that man a spoon,” ends the ad, which is run by Trump’s Make America Great Again PAC.
The ad’s “Puddingfinger” reference is from a Daily Beast news post in March, including an anecdote from the Florida governor who ate chocolate pudding with his fingers on a private flight in March 2019.
Why it matters: The ad is obviously intended to arouse disgust, called Rohini Kosoglu, former Deputy Presidential Assistant Joe Biden, while speaking to CNN over the weekend. The ad’s premise appears to take off Biden’s agenda, she said, noting that a few weeks ago the president said he would not cut Medicare or Social Security.
During the CNN segment, host Jake Tapper quoted The Washington Post as pointing out that ironically, Trump had proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security programs in every single budget Trump sent to Congress during his presidency.
Trump officially declared his candidacy for the GOP…
