PITTSBURGH, August 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The United Steelworkers (USW) announced today that the union has reached an interim agreement on a new four-year contract on behalf of approximately 12,000 members at 13 Cleveland-Cliffs locations.

USW International Vice President (Administration) David McCallwho is leading negotiations with Cliffs, thanked union members for working through the pandemic and standing in solidarity for the fair contract that essential steelworkers deserved and deserve.

“Our preliminary agreement with Cliffs management recognizes the critical role Steelworkers have played in the company’s success,” said McCall. “The proposed treaty offers important economic and contractual language improvements that will improve the working conditions and standard of living of USW members and their families.”

The preliminary agreement improves current wages, strengthens existing health insurance provisions for employees and retirees without increasing costs, and includes a commitment for Cliffs to invest 4 billion dollars in USW represented institutions during its term.

“Our plants will continue to be safer, and our jobs and services safer, under the proposed agreement,” McCall said. “Cliffs is committed to a plan to invest in its USW facilities that will improve manufacturing, create sustainable jobs for USW members and ensure the company’s success.”

“Our local union leaders, activists and members have a history of facing challenges and know what it takes to guide the industry through its ups and downs cycles,” McCall said. “We look forward to the future knowing Cliffs understands that our plants run best when management and our union work together to solve problems for the benefit of all.”

The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in the manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemical, glass, automotive parts and power generation sectors, as well as a growing number of engineering, public sector and service workers.
