To track articles written about him, Russia’s federal media regulator – Roskomnadzor – has a secret team that alerts Putin’s staff when there are online mentions of the president as a “bald dwarf,” “Hitler-wannabe,” or “thief.” Daily Beast reportedciting the independent news agency iStories.

The details came to light after Belarusian hackers penetrated an internal network of Roskomnadzor and accessed a large volume of data held by a department that regulates the media. According to reports, the data was shared with Russian journalists, who in turn published the results of their investigations into the matter.

The revelations also showed that Roskomnadzor employees prepare reports on all negative publications about Putin and inform the president’s administration and Russian security services about critics, the report said.

Employees reportedly log in at 8:30 a.m. every morning to scan any online conversations that might pose a threat to Putin. Among them were even memes that could harm his macho image. The report cited an example of Putin’s face on the body of a crab or the statement “Putin is a crab.”

Federal officials also closely followed reports about Putin’s health, including those who said so The President was in critical condition or had dementia. The leak also revealed that Russia’s search engine leader, Yandex, is censoring online content that doesn’t cast Putin in a good light.

The goal of surveillance and censorship is to quell unrest, as once a leader falls out of favor with his people, security forces may try to get rid of him, the report said, citing one of them Putin’s former speechwriters.
