Liquor retailer’s second southern location successfully unionizes

HOUSTON, September 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Drivers and helpers from Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC), a beer, wine and spirits retailer, voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 988. They’re the first location that many will attend Texas to organize, and only the second in the south.

“Recent years have made it clear that workers who power this country’s supply chain are vital to our economy and deserve better from their employers,” he said Robert Mele, Local 988 President. “The Teamsters are proud to lead this historic development Houston organizing action, and the 8,000 members of Local 988 are proud to welcome these hard-working RNDC employees to the Teamster family.”

“These workers stood their ground and refused to back down, and that’s what Teamster is about,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “It’s a new day Texas for the Teamsters and a new day for the American labor movement. We will put the same intense energy into negotiating with RNDC that we put into every contract, so buckle up and hold on.”

“This win was a long time coming,” said RNDC driver Martin Williams. “I’m so proud of all my colleagues who worked hard and stuck together to make this happen. We are Teamsters and now is the time to get the contract we deserve.”

“We started this fight because we want what everyone wants – respect at work and being able to provide for our families,” said RNDC driver Osvaldo Herrera. “That was the first big step, but the fight is not over yet. We are in it for the long term.”

Founded in 1967, Teamsters Local 988 represents workers in a variety of industries Houston and the surrounding communities. For more information visit Teamster988.org/.
