Russia recently announced that military education will be included in the country’s secondary school curricula from 2023. The new The curriculum will take students through approximately 35 hours of training.

Russian news agency TASS quoted Minister of Education Sergei Kravtsov that the new course will be introduced in schools from the next school year. It is currently being designed and will begin testing after January 1st.

According to the Russian daily IzvestiaThis approach is similar to Soviet-era practice where high school students learn first aid, navigation skills, and gun handling.

However, teachers at various schools said that the Russian curriculum was already overloaded with numerous other new subjects, raising concerns about the implementation of the program, the Russian daily reported.

Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Valery Gerasimov has campaigned for the introduction of military training in schools. He has suggested that 10th and 11th graders receive 140 hours of training, Izvestia reported.

Kravtsov said the teachers will begin training, which is expected to be completed by January 1, 2023. It will initially be launched as a pilot program before final approval.

Referring to Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine, Ukrainian forces entered the strategic city of Kherson in southern Ukraine on Friday after Russian troops withdrew.

Despite the withdrawal, the Kremlin warned that Kherson’s status was not changing, claims the city is still “a part of Russia”.“
