Russian hackers have reportedly targeted US nuclear research labs: Here’s…

A group of Russians allegedly attacked by hackers three US nuclear research laboratories in the summer of 2022.

The Russian group cold river conducted a phishing campaign against scientists at Brookhaven, Argonne and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories to obtain passwords, Reuters reports.

According to the message hacker created fake login pages for the labs and contacted nuclear scientists to try to get them to reveal their passwords.

“This is one of the most important hacking groups you have never heard of,” Reuters is quoted as saying Adam MeyersSenior Vice President of Intelligence at a US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike Saying. “They are involved in direct support of the Kremlin’s information operations.”

Cold River hacked into and leaked emails from the former head of Britain’s MI6 spy service in 2022 and targeted the UK Foreign Office in 2016.

The hacking team has been involved in many other high profile hacking incidents.

According to Reuters, Western officials say the Russian government is a world leader in hacking and using cyberespionage to spy on foreign governments and industries to gain a competitive advantage.

In a blog post, SEKOIA.IO said Cold River attempted to contribute to the “Russian intelligence collection of identified evidence related to war crimes and international justice proceedings.” However, Reuters could not confirm this detail.
