A display of Snoop Dogg’s Cali Red Wine was removed from a Kroger along with a life-size cutout of Snoop KR Supermarket in a Georgia town after shoppers called it stereotypical and offensive to sell the rapper’s wine during Black History Month.
“I just found it offensive,” Johnnie Jones, one of the buyers, a former president of the local NAACP, told WSB-TV Channel 2.
“They really advertise alcohol. Proud to drink wine? No. We are proud of the Tuskegee Airmen on whose shoulders I stand. We have to be curious,” said Jones, a former commercial and military pilot. He added that he would have preferred the store to recognize pioneers like Atlanta’s first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, or Ed Johnson, Fayetteville’s first black mayor.
According to local TV station, not only was he greeted by the life-size cutout of Snoop presenting his wine, but also bottles of sparkling wine from Tha Doggfather’s label, along with Black Girl Magic wine, which were displayed nearby in the fruit and veg section.
But apparently it was a bulletin board next to the display with phrases like “Dream like Martin” and “Say it out loud, ‘I’m black and I’m proud'” that sparked controversy among shoppers, who said the overall message was a Slap in the face during Black History Month.
Although not everyone found the displays offensive. “I didn’t think there was anything wrong with running an ad from Snoop,” said one woman, HipHopDX reported. “I mean, if you’re going to drink wine, whether it’s Black History Month or not, it shouldn’t make a difference.”
Following the backlash, Kroger’s corporate offices released a statement. “Kroger is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in everything we do. Our intentions are never meant to be offensive.”
