South Korea considers arming Ukraine, Putin’s ally reacts

Former Russian President and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedevwarned Seoul against it Moscow would deliver Kim Jong Un with the most modern weapons if South Korea decides to arm Ukraine.

What happened: president Yoon Suk Yeol said Tuesday in an interview ahead of a visit to Washington next week that Seoul will consider arming Kiev if it does a major new attack on Ukraine.

In response to Yoon’s comments, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Medvedev said in a telegram: “I wonder what the residents of this country are doing [South Korea] will say when they see the latest designs of Russian weapons in the hands of their closest neighbors – our DPRK partners [North Korea]?”

The Kremlin also criticized the South Korean president for taking a “pretty unfriendly position in this whole story”.

In a briefing by the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “They (Ukraine) will try to draw more and more countries directly into this conflict. But of course, the start of arms shipments indirectly means some involvement in this conflict.”

Why it matters: Although Seoul has provided economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and condemned Putin’s invasion, it did so In contrast to the USA, refrained from supplying arms and its European allies.

President Yoon’s government said his comments during the interview did not indicate any change in government policy, Yonhap News Agency reported.
